The Wild Mussel of Marina di Ravenna is a unique product. It differs from all other mussels, as it does not derive from a breeding process. La Selvaggia arises from the wild banks present in the waters off the Romagna coast and completes its life cycle, naturally anchored to the submerged pylons of the offshore methane platforms and to the submarine rocks of the guardian piers. It grows in waters classified for their healthiness and this means that once landed, it is ready for consumption, without having to undergo relaying or purification processes.
Habitat
La Selvaggia grows in pure waters off the coast, up to a depth of 12 meters below the surface level. It develops in a very important habitat for the upper Adriatic, in fact it grows within about seventy artificial atolls protected by other types of fishing, consisting of offshore platforms. The submerged architectures of the platforms offer shelter to a very numerous series of other marine species, which coexist with mussels and which together with them constitute the rich and delicate biodiversity of these small protected marine areas.
Period of sale
La Selvaggia completes its reproductive cycle in about a year, a period in which it reaches the commercial size of 50mm. Its harvesting season begins at the end of spring and, depending on the development conditions of the wild shoals, it can last until the end of september.
